The Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board is a regulatory authority established through the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (HPCA Act) 2003. Its principle purpose is to protect the health and safety of the public by ensuring that Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians are competent and fit to practice their professions.
The function of the Board therefore encompasses registration, accreditation of educational institutions, standards setting, promotion and review of competence, discipline and qualification requirements.
The Registrar takes a lead role in providing effective management and administrative services to the Board, as well as ensuring the statutory functions of the HPCA Act are implemented, with the support of a small team.
Key responsibilities include providing effective support to the Board, maintaining regular contact with registered practitioners relating to standards of practice, ensuring registrations and annual practising certificates are processed efficiently and an accurate register is maintained, overseeing the effective operation of the Board’s administrative function and activities, and building effective working relationships.
It’s important that the Registrar establishes effective external relationships with stakeholders, practitioners, educators and other regulatory bodies.
Person Profile: - A regulatory background with experience in administering a statutory function
- Knowledge of and experience in servicing Boards and Committees
- Ability to translate strategic direction as determined by the Board into successful operational initiatives
- Demonstrated financial, business and people management expertise
- Strong relationship management skills with a consultative approach
- Highly organised and efficient with time management
- Well developed presentation and communication skills
