Established in 1990, Fish & Game New Zealand (F&GNZ) manages, maintains and enhances sports fish and game birds and their habitats in the best long-term interests of present and future generations of anglers and hunters. F&GNZ oversees the effective management of the country’s sports fish and game resources carried out by 12 regions.

They are now seeking an experienced Policy Adviser to join their small and dedicated team.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, you will be responsible for providing assistance with internal policy, relevant legislation and statutory obligation for the organisation, which will include:

• Reviewing, managing and maintaining policy for internal application
• Providing advice on environmental and conservation matters
• Assisting with internal communications and media as required
• Providing advice on the Conservation and Wildlife Acts, relevant industry legislative changes and issues on a proactive basis
• Assisting the Chief Executive to prepare operational, planning and reporting documentation as well as submission on draft legislation or other central Government policy matters
• Preparing responses to enquiries and requests from external stakeholders
• Ensuring all internal policy, procedures, rules and guidelines are consistent and complied with across all the F&GNZ Councils
• Working closely with Chief Executive, F&GNZ Council Staff and Regional Managers, adding value at an operational level

This is a two-year fixed term contract, full time position based at the National office in Wellington. 40 hours per week with flexible working arrangements for the right candidate.

To be considered for this role, you will have a general understanding of the policy development process. You are a forward thinking and self-managing individual. You will be someone who has a proven track record in developing effective business relationships across the business and demonstrated research and writing capabilities.

Person Profile:

• Proven experience working in a similar role
• Relevant tertiary qualification in public policy, science or other relevant discipline
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong research, analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to establish priorities, manage projects and work to deadlines
• Has experience or a strong interest in fishing and hunting is advantageous
• Knowledge of and/or experience with the Conservation and Wildlife Acts (desirable)
• An understanding of how NZ parliament operates is advantageous
• Strong computer literacy and proficiency in MS Office Suite
• Demonstrates initiative and personal drive
• Must be a NZ citizen or hold a residence class visa

The initial term of the role will be for two years (fixed term). There is scope for the role to be extended beyond that period if the role has demonstrably contributed to the achievement of the F&GNZ’s goals and objectives.
